what are lifeguards?

What is Lifeguards?
A school based club for high school students that promotes peer-to-peer HIV prevention and education.

Who is eligible?
Any high school student in any school in Guilford County.

What are the requirements for joining?
All club members undergo eight hours of training that includes self-esteem, peer pressure, drinking and substance abuse and teaches courses in skills building and leadership.

What kinds of activities are Lifeguards involved in?


Lifeguards students are involved in a broad spectrum of educational campaigns as well as service-oriented programs, using a variety of activities to educate their peers, holding food drives and spending time caring for people infected with HIV. They work in homes, schools, churches and synagogues educating other teenagers about HIV/AIDS. They also volunteer their time at Beacon Place, a local Hospice facility for people with AIDS. Lifeguards have designed and produced their own outreach brochures, created t-shirts to identify the group, and created and staged awareness events for their community. For the last two years, Lifeguards have sponsored a county wide Dining for Friends Party raising more than $3,500 for Triad Health project.

Guilford County's Lifeguards have been recognized by the AlDS Action Council as a model program and have received commendation by the White House. In 1997, the Lifeguards were recognized for their efforts by the Guilford County Commissioners, the local Volunteer Center and were awarded the North Carolina's Governor Award as Outstanding Volunteers in Health Promotion.
